Gladiator Fights

Gladiators were slaves, criminals and at one point christians. They were forced to fight with eachother and animals to death. The victor is the person who lives. If the gladiator wins all his fights for 3 consecutive years they earn their freedom. They are part of one of the many distractions for the people in ancient Rome.

Some of the distractions today in the U.S to day are: sports, televison, movies, malls, amusement parks, etc. Some sports are similar to gladiator fights b/c two men fight for glory. Most of the time sports are violent. As humans we are entertained by the pain of others.

In our opinion, we are just like the ancient Romans who watched these barberic events. Just as they did, we are entertained by violence and the pain of others.

Philosophers

After losing the Peloponnesian war the people of Athens started to question the world around them. These people who asked complicated question that were addressed to their own ethics, beliefs and gods, were called philosophers. One of these great philosophers was Socrates; he was sentenced to death because he corrupted the youth of Athens and neglected the city’s gods. Then there was Plato, he wrote a book called “The Republic”. One of their legacies is the scientific method which was left by Aristotle.

He made the Athenian Navy the strongest in the Mediterranean sea, he built gold and marble statues to make the city glorious and he increased the number of public workers by paying the government workers.
